Famous Hills in Guilin City

 

Guilin is world famous for its amazing scenery, especially its karst mountains. The city of Guilin has five famous mountains that stand out in not only their beauty, but also their historic significance. The five mountains are Elephant Trunk (xiangbishan) Hill, Chuanshan Hill, Folded Brocade (Diecai) Hill, Wave Subduing (Fubo) Hill, and Solitary Beauty (Duxiu Feng) Peak. The most famous is Elephant Trunk Hill. It is located where the Peach Blossom River empties into the Li River and is the symbol of Guilin. Its shape resembles an elephant drinking from the river. Chuanshan Hill is located north of the Elephant Trunk Hill. It has a large round cave that goes straight through the mountain. There is a smaller hill located across the river from it that has a Ming Dynasty pagoda on top of it. These two hills are very picturesque. Wave Subduing Hill is also located on the Li River. It is a beautiful hill filled with caves. The caves' walls have many carvings on them. Some are ancient poems and travelogues and some are Buddhist carvings. Folded Brocade Hill is a large hill also located on the banks of the Li River. The mountain does not have many carvings, but it does offer spectacular views of Guilin's downtown and surrounding areas. The Solitary Beauty Peak is the only one of the five famous mountains not located on the Li River. It is located in Guilin's downtown in the heart of the city's ancient Ming Dynasty Imperial Palace. The hill was once the exclusive property of imperial prince's and was not open to the public. Now visitors can climb this magnificent hill and admire its ancient carvings. Inside the hill is a complex of caves that have many beautiful carvings in it. These five hills are exquisite and no visit to Guilin is complete without visiting at least a couple of them.
