When you cruise on Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo, there are too many stunning views for your eye to take in. Among all of them, Nine Horse Nine Fresco Hill(jiuma hua shan) is the extremely important one you should never miss. Whether you are an enthusiast of artistic Chinese ink and wash paintings, you will be marveled by the legendary hill.
Nine Horse Mural Hill is 61km from Guilin and 4km from Xinping. The cliff face has images of what appeared to be a group of horses. Variegated in yellow and white, dark and light, the horses assume a variety of poses: some seem to be running, some just lying there and others playing. These images have been present on the mountain side for centuries.

It is said that a herdsman(Monkey King) from the heaven who brought his horses to Li River. It is so happened that an artist saw those horses and wanted to draw them. Unfortunately, the horses were so scared of him that they ran into the cliff and never came out again.
Legend says that if a person can point out all the nine horses on the precipice, she or he would be the winner of the next Imperial Examination. It is reported that Premier Zhou Enlai and President Bill Clinton were able to recognize and identify all of the nine horses. When you cruise approaching the hill, be brace yourself for the exciting moment! There is only three minutes' best viewing angle for you to identify all of the nine horses. Just have fun and use your imagination!
