*Local Tour Guide Talks about Guilin*
Hi, my name is Sue from the marketing department of China Odyssey Tours (COT). Luckily this week, I had a chance to interview an excellent tour guide (Paul) from our company. I would really love to share with you some Guilin travel information that I got from him. Hopefully, this letter can give you an idea about the tour guides of our company as well.
Having worked in the tourism industry for more than 4 years and been with COT since 2006, Paul, as a Guilin local tour guide, has a lot of first hand experience travelling in the local area. The interview was done in the atmosphere of casual chatting. In order to save your reading time I have cut short and reorganized our conversation; only providing you the most useful information.

| |
Sue: How do you like Guilin? |
Paul: Guilin is a very nice small city; from one side to the other side only takes 40 minutes by bus. The living costs in Guilin are lower than other cities and there is less pressure. Although we don’t earn as much money, we have an easier life. The transportation is convenient; easy to travel to other places.
| |
Sue: Give me a reason to visit Guilin. |
| |
Paul: Guilin is a must-visit place in China; 95% of my customers like Guilin and some of them told me that Guilin is the most beautiful city in China.
There are four highlights in Guilin: Li River cruise, hills, caves, and the minority culture. On the Li River cruise, you can enjoy the moat beautiful Karst formation. In the Longsheng minority villages, you can experience the lifestyle and minority culture, and enjoy the amazing rice terraces scenery. In Yangshuo County, you can experience the country life by cycling around the villages to get a close look at the local culture; and then you can relax on West Street to have a cup of coffee. Guilin is also a historical city, with an ancient city wall and Buddha statues in the cave on Fubo Hill.

Sue: When is the best time to visit Guilin? |
Paul: Many tour agencies would recommend the month of October. They think fall is the best season to visit Guilin, and from September to the end of November is the best time. In my opinion, it is too warm, even a little hot. Personally, I think spring time is the best time to visit Guilin. More specifically, April and May are the best months to visit Guilin.
| |
Sue: Could you describe how the four seasons are in Guilin?
Paul: Of course. Different seasons have different scenic views and beauty. If you miss your chosen time to see Guilin, never mind, it’s still very worth your time to visit.
Spring: warming tem wenperatures and frequent rain, fresh air and beautiful green scenery. Everything is green and fresh. The hills are green, trees are green, and the water is clean.
Summer: usually from July to the end of October, it is very warm. Girls have to take care of their skin; biking and hiking can be very hot--it’s worthy, as the views are really amazing. If the biking or hiking is done in the early morning it will be enjoyable, it is still nice at that time of day. Summer time is a good time to try the Li River Cruise. |
Autumn: continuing warm and dryer, a good time for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The rice terraces are getting yellow then, it is very beautiful.
Winter: very cold and there is not much rain. Winter time is not a very good time to enjoy a cruise, but if it is snowing at Longsheng, the rice terrace scenery can be fantastic, although still cold.

Sue: What shall travelers pay attention to while travelling in China? |
| |
Sue: How do you like your job as a tour guide? |
Paul: I enjoy my job. As a tour guide, I have to know almost everything, and need to be friendly and be able to communicate. I have to know what my customers really want from the trip. I can make contact with different people, I can tell them about Chinese culture, as well as exchange ideas in lifestyle, interest and food. I like to make friends with my customers and keep in touch for a long time. I have received little gifts from my customers, and some of them have even invited me to their countries.

| |
Sue: How do you like the customers of COT?
Paul: Very good. They come from different countries with different living styles and characteristics, but they are very friendly, and tip well (Paul smiled again). Their ages range from 30 to 60 in general and some times there are couples with young kids. Most of my customers are quite nice; I have met some tough customers, though less than 10%. I will always try my best to help them to have an enjoyable trip.
Paul is thinking of being a travel consultant next year. As far as I know, at COT, many travel consultants used to be excellent tour guides. With his rich experiences and tourism knowledge, I am sure Paul is capable of providing constructive suggestions to our valuable customers. Good luck Paul!
I hope this letter is useful for you. Don’t hesitate to share it with your friends. Thanks a lot!
