Sky River - Tibet's Yarlung Zangbo River

Yarlung Zangbo is the highest major river in the world with a total length of 2,900 kilometers, of which 1,787 kilometers within China's territory. The river runs over the most fertile land on the Tibetan plateau. Many Tibetan town and villages, including the capital Lhasa, are sited along or near the Yarlung Zangbo River. After a dramatic U-turn at almost 180 degrees, the river flows into India and empties into the Indian Ocean.

Magnificent Views along the Sky River

Yarlung Zangbo River is charmingly pure and unpolluted. When it flows onto the grassland, the river water is still like a jade belt. When it runs into the valleys and canyons, the water roars like a wild beast. Along the way the river passes, the highland vegetations and the snowy mountain backdrops create some of the most breathtaking views you could ever imagine.

The most accessible section of the Yarlung Zangbo River is between Shigatse and Lhasa. Shigatse in Tibetan language means"the manor with the most fertile land". It is located 280 kilometers south west to Lhasa upstream the Yarlung Zangbo River. Driving along the national highway G318 following the river is going to be one of the most unforgettable experience in your lifetime.

Around 400 kilometers south east to Lhasa downstream the Yarlung Zangbo River is the area called Nyingchi. The magnificent Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon starts from here, and the river changes its direction backward to the Indian Ocean. For adventurers the canyon is one of the most attractive and beautiful places on the earth. It is also challenging and dangerous for normal tourists to visit.

The Longest and the Largest Canyon in the World

The title of World's Longest and Largest Canyon is now belonged to the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. 56.3 kilometers longer than the Colorado Grand Canyon in the United States of America, previously considered the world's longest, and more than 2000 meters deeper than Peru's Colca Canyon previously known as the world's deepest canyon, Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon (496 kilometers long with average depth of more than 5000 meters) is a magic land lying along the northern foothills of the Himalayas in Tibet. In the length of the canyon, the Yarlung Zangbo River drops 2,700 meters making a sharp U-turn and then joins the Brahmaputra River in India.
