Reputed as the 8th Wonder of the World, the Great Wall winds its way through mountains, grasslands and deserts for some 4,000 miles across northern China.

But the term 'Great Wall' is something of a misnomer as there is a net of walls of varying ages all designed to provide protection from intruders; a great man-made complex of walls, forts and signal stations.
