Breakfast

It is normally served at the hotel where you stay. Depending on the hotel, the breakfast would be in western style, Chinese style, or a combination.

A la carte lunch

When plan your lunches, we consider the balance of food quality, dining environment and tour convenience. We provide a la carte lunch in a local restaurant whenever possible. A la carte meal will give you an opportunity to eat at local restaurant, follow local customs, and taste local dishes. The a la carte allowance would be adequate for a decent meal in our recommended local restaurants, but varies from different restaurants and different cities. However in some remote regions where it’s simply hard to find a non-tourist restaurant, the meal could be arranged at a local tourist restaurant or a local family.

Your own dinner choice

Dinners will not be included in your meal plan unless you have that requirement. Enjoying the local food could be one of your best experiences in China. This is why we provide you this flexibility of food choice. Your private guide will always give you good suggestions based on your preferences.

If you have certain food allergies or special requirements such as vegetarian food, let us know. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Private Guide & Transfer

You will have a private tour guide, private driver, and an air-conditioned vehicle escorting you at every destination you travel. This will provide you with maximized personal care, security, and flexibility.

All of our tour guides are qualified professionals and registered English Speaking Tourist Guides in China who are reassessed annually. All of our tour vehicles are clean and in excellent condition, manned with licensed safe drivers.

Private Tour Guide

You will always be greeted punctually on arrival at each destination airport. At every departure, your guide will stay at your side until you have checked in and passed through the security checkpoint.

All of our travel guides in every destination are locals, who know the area well, they are very good at guiding you around and telling background stories of the tour sites, as well as showing you the secret spots for taking your best photos.

When changing your itinerary is needed due to unexpected reasons, your private tour guides will be more than accommodating in suggesting alternatives to ensure that you have a wonderful experience.

Private Transportation

With our comfortable and safe private transportation, your tour will be more relaxing and less tiresome, keeping you in the best spirits to make the most of your experience in China.

In every destination visited, your vehicle is air conditioned, clean, and expertly maintained. Your private driver is licensed, insured, and very experienced.

Linda, our guide from Odyssey tours in Beijing was excellent. The 3 days in Beijing were incredible. She took us to the usual touristic places but also to a traditional chinese doctor, a silk factory. Both turned out to be very interesting. I strongly recommend hiring Odyssey Tours to travel around the Asian countries. They are very responsible, very knowledgeable about the history of the places, they understand right away what you want to see and they take you to the best places.

My husband and I were making our second trip to China (we had already spent 10 days in and around Beijing in 2011), and decided to book an 8-day tour to Guilin/Yangshuo and Xi’an with China Odyssey Tours. They did an absolutely fabulous job. We dealt by e-mail with Tom, who was very responsive, suggested sights to see and excursions from our base cities, and customized the tour for us. He booked the hotels and the three flights; Beijing-Guilin, Guilin-Xi’an, and Xi’an-Beijing, and arranged a guide/driver for each city. At all times, we were kept informed as to our flight times, offered choices etc. The booking process was efficient and friendly.

On arrival in Guilin, we were met promptly at the airport by our driver/car and Nora, our tour guide, who spoke perfect English. She took us to our hotel, checked us in, and made us feel welcome. The hotel was lovely, right in the middle of a scenic “mini-lake” area of Guilin, with a delicious and extensive local breakfast (famous noodles). We toured the sights in Guilin itself by day, and Nora and the driver arranged to take us to the famous evening boat trip around the lakes, which are all lit up at night. We saw hands-on cormorant fishing, as well as several small “entertainments” (dancing, singing, drumming) held on the shore-line in buildings that you can see from the boat. It was a delightful evening. We wanted to buy a real piece of traditional Chinese art depicting the karst mountains, so Nora arranged for us to visit the Guilin Art Gallery, where we met the head of gallery (who translated for us) and a well-known local painter. To demonstrate the technique, he made a lovely brush painting of bamboo right in front of us, which we were allowed to keep, and we bought one of his landscapes. They rolled and packed them for us, and both pieces are now proudly displayed on our living room wall.

Our driver took us on a day-trip outside the city to the Longji rice terraces (Ping’an village - fantastic views from the top). Nora arranged a tasty lunch at a nice local restaurant. The highlight of this section of the trip was the day cruise (with Nora) down the Li river, with the fantastic karst mountains, to the small provincial town of Yangshuo, which has spectacular scenery. It was fascinating to see all the traditional boat life going on along this large river and its shores. In Yangshuo, we spent some time looking through the local market with Nora, then our driver took us to our hotel, which was a charming inn with a gorgeous view overlooking the river and karst mountains. The local food was great; we really enjoyed eating the local specialties. In the evening, Nora accompanied us to the “special show” on the Li river in Yangshuo. This is not to be missed, and is such a unique spectacle it is hard to describe. It was one of the highlights of our China trip. The next day, we returned to Guilin with Nora and our driver by road. For the next leg of our trip, Nora accompanied us to the airport, checked us in, and made sure that we were all set for our flight to Xi’an before saying goodbye to us.

We have no hesitation in recommending China Odyssey Tours to anyone who wants a customized China experience at a great price. We feel that we got excellent value for money. The price covered plane travel, hotels, breakfast and lunch, guide/driver/car, river cruise, and the cost of admission to all the historic sights, museums etc. We really only needed cash for dinners, evening entertainment and the purchase of souvenirs. We received frequent phone calls from their head office, checking that we were fine, and asking for feedback or improvements. We appreciated the flexibility of the tour guides regarding our daily activities, and they (and the driver) went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience (make sure you tip them well). We greatly enjoyed talking to them about the way of life in China, culture, local ethnic minorities, food etc. We not only had a great holiday, but we learned a lot about China, and ate a lot of great food as well. It is a fascinating country in transition, with a lot to offer.

At all times, we were kept informed as to our flight times, offered choices etc. The booking process was efficient and friendly.

On arrival in Xi’an, we were met promptly at the airport by our driver/car and Forrest, our tour guide, who spoke perfect English. We spent the first afternoon at the ancient tombs, since they are close to the airport. Forrest was very knowledgeable, and made sure that we understood the history, and what we were looking at. The hotel in Xi’an was very comfortable, and located close to the city walls and the other important sights. We spent most of one day at the Terracotta Warriors archaeological site, which was simply staggering in its size, and the fine detail of the soldiers, horses and chariots. The painstaking process of assembling the broken pieces could be seen at the back of the exhibit. Forest suggested a trip to the Xi’an museum, which was very well laid out, with fascinating exhibits. It gave us a better appreciation of the history of the region. Xi’an is the ancient capital of China, and we really enjoyed our walk with Forrest around the top of the city walls, which are very old and staggering in size. In the evening, he arranged for us to attend the Tang Dynasty Dumpling Feast at a hotel nearby, which is a must-do. It involves being served over 20 different kinds of Xi’an’s famous (very tasty) dumplings, followed by a song/dance/martial arts entertainment typical of the Tang dynasty imperial court. I’m sure it was “touristy”, but it was beautifully done, and very enjoyable. Most of the audience was Chinese, and they enjoyed it as well.

Xi’an is at the eastern end of the silk road, and has one of the great mosques of China. We spent an afternoon with Forrest exploring the mosque, and meandering around the thriving tightly packed Muslim quarter, where ethnic minorities in their traditional dress offer tasty street food and hand-made scarves/clothing.

We left the city for a full-day trip to Hua-Shan, the sacred mountain with the infamous “plank walk” along its sheer sides. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive, and most people go up to the top by cable-car these days, rather than walking. Once up there, we hiked around with Forrest, had a hot noodle lunch, visited some of the temples, and enjoyed the amazing views. We are older (60s) but fit, and had no difficulties. Many of the walking paths have been re-built to make them safer, and we stayed away from the steep narrow trails. For anyone with a sense of adventure, this is a great day out (we were the only non-Chinese people at the top of the mountain!).

We told Forrest that we wanted to eat the spicy local food, and he took us to some great places (the best was a restaurant near the hotel called Edelweiss!), where he helped us order the dishes and pay for the dinner. We really appreciated the extra time he spent making sure we had a great culinary experience. For the final leg of our trip, Forrest accompanied us to the airport, checked us in, and made sure that we were all set for our flight back to Beijing before saying goodbye to us.

My weekend tour to Beijing was a success! My tour guide Tracy, was great! Tracy, was very knowledgeable, helpful, flexible and energetic. I have to say after being in China, for business for the past couple of weeks, my Odyssey tour to Beijing has been the highlight of my entire trip and exceeded my expectations.

Going to Beijing solo I was unsure on how the tour would be, but Tracy, went above any beyond to ensure that I enjoyed my trip from the day I was picked up, until my departure.

Also before I forget, the driver John was timely and flexible as well, as he played a huge role in getting us around to each destination and maneuvering through traffic. John and Tracy worked great together as a team.

I would recommend China Odyssey Tour to my co-workers, family, and Friends.

My family of four planned our first trip to China with China Odyssey Tours. We included two days in Xian. We were met by our guide Ivan at the airport as we arrived from Chengdu. He assisted us with our luggage and escorted us to the waiting van. We visited the city walls, the Terracotta warriors, Great Mosque and Muslim quarter, small wild goose pagoda, and a terracotta/ceramics factory. We also spent one dinner with a local family. Ivan coordinated all these activities efficiently and ensured that my children had time to practice their own calligraphy at the wild goose pagoda, that we had enough time to take all the pictures we wanted at each site, and arranged meals that our kids could enjoy as they are not used to spicy food. Ivan took care of all these details and we were able to relax and enjoy our experiences. We highly recommend Ivan as a fun, engaging tour guide with a generous amount of knowledge that enhanced our experience.
