Meals

Breakfast - All the breakfasts are served in the hotels that you stay at, with both Chinese & Western foods, which will cater to your appetite well enough.

Lunch - Lunches are usually arranged at the Chinese restaurants near the scenic spots, with clean environment and healthy food. The tour guides will order the food according to your appetite. Most are Chinese dishes, and some are modified to fit westerners' taste. A complimentary glass of beer or soft drink is served with lunch.

Dinner - Same as lunch. If you are individual travelers and do not like Chinese food, China Odyssey Tours suggests dinner on your own and our local tour guide can recommend some good western restaurants.

Beijing roast duck

Beijing Quanjude Roasts Ducks: Quanjude (Group) Co.LTD is located at No.14, Qianmen West Street, in Beijing. This famous restaurant was established in 1864. It has more than 200 branches located in; Beijing, some of China's larger cities, and abroad, making it the largest roast duck company in China.

Quanjude roasts its ducks in an open oven. The duck is marinated in their special marinade, and hung in the oven over a wood fire, so the smoke from the fire can help flavor the meat. Date, or Pear wood is used, and it takes approximately 40 minutes for the duck to be fully roasted.

Since its establishment, Quanjude has created over 400 different dishes, each with a unique flavor to serve the customers. Many government leaders, officials and VIPs from nearly 200 countries and regions have visited Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant and had the well-known all-duck banquet. With its high quality, services, and the unique roasting technique, Quanjude enjoys a very high reputation among domestic and overseas consumers. In 1999, it was awarded the title of 'China Renowned Trademark'.



Beijing Huajia Yiyuan restaurant

Beijing Huajia Yiyuan: Huajia Yiyuan is one of Beijing's most famous restaurants. The restaurant, formerly a high ranking military official's residence, features a unique courtyard complex.

Located on Guijie (Ghost Street), Hujia Yiyuan, is worth walking to. Guijie is lit with Chinese lanterns, and hosts a multitude of restaurants that are open all night. You can recognize Hujia Yiyuan by its traditional gate. Come and enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere in the main courtyard while traditionally dressed musicians play Chinese music to accompany your meal. Listening to music, while sitting in historic surroundings makes this an elegant and romantic dining experience.

Huajia Yiyuan has two locations on Guijie (Ghost Street). It serves delicious Beijing and Sichuan cuisine in historic surroundings, and also has beautiful private rooms for more intimate meals. Popular favorites are spareribs, roasted buns and spicy crayfish. The western location features a lively tarp-topped dining room with nightly acrobatic performances.

Tibetan milk tea

Lhasa Tibetan Milk Tea: Tea is Tibetans' favorite drink. Tibet's famous Buttered tea is known throughout the world, but less well known is Tibet's sweet milk tea. This special tea tastes like a combination of English and Indian tea. The hot boiling black tea is poured into a churn, and then fresh milk and sugar are added. Vigorous churning turns out a light reddish white drink. Tibetan milk tea is rich in protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. It provides essential nutrients for people living in this harsh climate. Visitors to a Tibetan family will undoubtedly be served this traditional drink. It is also served in every one of Lhasa's numerous tea houses.

Fried with barley flour, ghee and sugar, the Tibetan ghee cake is golden-yellow in color, and very delicious. It is very popular with the Tibetan people, and can be purchased on most streets of Lhasa and the other Tibetan cities.



Guoqiao Mixian
Yunnan Guoqiao Mixian: Guoqiao Mixian is known as Yunnan's spaghetti. Its noodles are white, pencil thick, a foot long, and delicious. The noodles are served in a broth with meat slices, and seasonings. The broth is made from pork, chicken, duck, and ham. The noodles are sometimes served with vegetables, and dove or chicken eggs. When the broth is ready, the noodles are added, poured from one bowl to another, giving the noodle dish its name. This tasty Yunnan food is famous throughout China. A visitor to Yunnan can find this famous dish at the Jixin Yunnan Flavor Restaurant, or the Guoqiaodu Restaurant.


Yunnan Yak Jerky
Yunnan Yark Jerky: Tasty, delicious, and fresh, yak Jerky is one of the specialties of Yunnan. The meat comes from yaks that graze on the snowy plateau grasslands. Careful production processes, and carefully processing ensures that the meat is fresh and pure. It is the best nutritional food for tourism, camping and those who expend large amounts of energy. This food is very convenient to take with you.


Chuan Food

Chengdu Chuan Food: Sichuan's hot, spicy; 'Tongue Numbing' dishes are a unique style of cuisine that was already famous over 800 years ago. The uniquely hot, pungent flavor is created by a mixture of spices and condiments, including red hot peppers, garlic and ginger. Considered one of the eight major styles of Chinese cooking Sichuan dishes are also known for its attention to color, smell, and presentation with an emphasis on taste. Some of the better known dishes are:
Ma Po Tofu (It is bean curd served with very hot chili minced meat); Sauteed Pork Slices with Hot Peppers; Fish Head in Bean Curd Soup; Fish Flavored Eggplant; Steamed Yellow Croaker; Boiled Cabbage;Crystal Shrimps; Shrimps on Rice Crust; Fish-Flavored Pork; Steamed Beef with Ground Rice; Twice-cooked Pork; Fish in Chili Bean Sauce; Ham with Bamboo Shoots
When visiting Chengdu, visitors can taste these authentic local Sichuan dishes. These dishes are unique to this area of China.



Yangshuo Beer Fish

Yangshuo Beer Fish: Yangshuo Beer Fish is Yangshuo's most famous dish. It is made from fresh caught Li River carp. The fresh fish is fried in a wok along with beer, hot and green peppers, garlic, onions, celery, tomatoes, soy, and sugar. Visitors are amazed at how delicious the fish's skin is and how fresh and tender the meat is. Eating Yangshuo's beer fish will be an unforgettable culinary experience.

Yangshuo's famous West Street has many restaurants serving this delicious dish. The Tao's Authentic Beer Fish, and The Older Sister of Peng's Beer Fish come highly recommended.



Lipu Taro Looped Meat, Guilin food
Guilin Lipu Taro Looped Meat: Lipu Taro Looped Meat is a famous traditional dish served in the traditional Guilin banquets. It is always found during festivals or important events. This dish is made of taro from Lipu County (104 km south of Guilin) combined with streaky pork, red pepper, garlic spread, Guilin fermented bean curd, wine, honey and many other seasonings. Before the streaky pork and taro are steamed in bamboo steamers, they must be deep-fried in vegetable oil. The finished dish is golden in color and aromatic. The taro's flavor and the pork's freshness blend perfectly to create a wonderful dish. In addition, this dish has certain health benefits, such as eliminating heat and purging fire, as well as softening the complexion. This famous dish is available at almost every restaurant in Guilin.


Luohanguo, Guilin specialty

Guilin Luohanguo: Fructus momordicae, called Luohanguo in Chinese, is primarily grown in southern China's Guangxi Province, with the majority coming from the mountains of Guilin. In China, traditional Chinese doctors have used Luohanguo as an expectorant, to fight heat stroke, acute or chronic throat inflammation, aphonia, and chronic cough for centuries. The sweet compounds from Luohanguo is about 250 times sweeter than cane sugar and is extremely low in calories, so that it is a good natural sweetener for patients who suffer from diseases that forbidden ingesting sugar, such as diabetes, adiposity, high blood pressure, and cardiopathy. It has been reported that the residents who live near in Yongfu and Lingui Counties (of Guilin), are recognized as having an unusually high number of residents living to an age 100 years or more. Some people attribute this to the consumption of Luohanguo.

The dried fruit may be bought in almost all the Guilin markets. The outer surface of the dried fruit is round and smooth, dusty yellow-brown or dusty green-brown. It is covered with fine, soft hair. The fruit is covered by a hard but thin skin. The entire fruit, including the seeds, have a nice sweet flavor. Luohanguo is best steeped in tea.

Airlines in China

There are quite a few airline companies in China, the ones we often use are: Air China (CA), China Eastern Airlines (MU), China Southern Airlines (CZ), Dragon air (KA), and Hainan Airlines (HU), who use the following airplanes: A300 / A310/ A319/ A320 /A321/ A340 & B737 / B747/ B757 /B767/ B777 / MD90/ MD82 /MD11 & BAE146, etc.

Airlines in China now sell e-tickets and all you need for check-in at the airport is to present your valid passport. When it is allowed, our local tour guide will go to the airline check-in counter and assist you until you get your boarding pass.

Luggage Regulations for domestic flights in China

For the check-in luggage, passengers holding an adult fare or half fare ticket are entitled to a free baggage allowance of 40kg (88 pounds) for first class, and 30kg (66pounds) for business class, while20kg (44 pounds) for economy class. No free baggage allowance is granted to infants. If your luggage is over the limitation, you will need to pay for the excess weight, and some of the airports in China are quite strict with this.

Tip for this: If you are traveling together in group more than 1 people, you can use your allowance together, for example, if you have 35kg, your friend have only 5kg, it will be fine as long as you two check in together. This method also applies to 3, 4, 5 or even more people within one group, as long as you are checking in at the same time over the airport counter.

For the carry-on luggage, total weight of carry-on baggage for each passenger may not exceed 5kg (11 pounds). First class passengers may carry up to 2 pieces. All other passengers may carry on only one piece. The size may not exceed 20x40x55cm. Carry- on baggage in excess of the limit is subject to an excess baggage fee and must be carried as checked baggage.
