China Odyssey Tours Frequently Asked Questions

About Yangtze Cruise:

    • How do I get onboard a cruiser?

If you book a single cruise tour with us, our travel consultant will send you an e-confirmation letter with all the details you need to embark on the cruiser.
If you choose tour packages of more than one cruise, our private guide and driver will transfer you to the pier to embark.

    • How much time does it take to pass through the five-level ship lock?

Normally it takes some 2.5 hours for your ship to pass through the five-level ship lock. But sometimes it takes even longer time because ships have to pass through it in batches. If your ship arrives earlier, it needs to wait for the late ships.

    • What are the major highlights along the Yangtze River?

As the longest river in China and the third longest river in the world, the Yangtze River snakes through mainland China from west to east, presenting unique scenery and culture. On a Yangtze cruise ship, you will enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Three Gorges and Three Gorges Dam and pass through many cultural sites. If weather permits, you can even go on shore excursions to the “Ghost City” Fengdu, Wanzhou, and Shibaozhai or extend to scenic and less-visited Lesser Three Gorges and Shennong Stream.

    • What does your price of the cruise include?

The price includes: accommodation onboard, meals of the day, entertainment and daily activities onboard, excursions on the bank, round-the-clock room service, port charges
The price excludes: individual consumption, beverages & alcohol, tipping, sauna & massage treatments, and featured restaurants.

    • What is the difference between upstream and downstream sailings?

The route of upstream sailings is Chongqing - Yichang - Wuhan, which takes less time to enjoy the spectacular scenery along the Yangzte River. It keeps sailing day and night, thus when sleeping the noise is much less and you can get a night of better sleep.

The route of downstream sailings is just the opposite of that of the upstream sailings. The ship will drop anchor at midnight and starts sailing in the early morning. That's why, for many ships, the downstream cruise is more expensive than the upstream one.

    • What are the dress codes on a Yangtze river cruise?

The Dress Code is casual during the day and while on shore. Shorts and t-shirts are fine, even in the dining room.
There is usually a captain's welcome dinner on the first or second night, and sometimes a farewell dinner (on some of the ships) on the last night onboard. It's usually a cocktail dinner with a buffet. You may dress comparatively "formal" - but I bet you can always see some people with informal even very casual clothes.
Remember, it's YOUR cruise and you should wear what's comfortable for you.

    • What is the newest condition of the Three Gorges Project?

The Three Gorges Project is the world's largest hydroelectric power plant so far, which was started in 1994 and will be finished in 2009. Now the project has entered its 3 rd stage of construction, in this period, all the turbine generator units will commence generating electricity, and the entire hinge project will be successfully completed.

    • What's the best time to take the Yangtze Cruise?

Most parts of the Yangtze River have subtropical climates and due to high cliffs, the narrow valley areas are often humid and cool with insufficient sunshine. The average temperature reaches 30C in July and lowers to 10C in January. Thunderstorms and heavy rains can be common in the summertime while winter is often short and cold. Spring and autumn are the best time to take a Yangtze Cruise and visit the Three Gorges as the weather are often delightful and the scenery is at its best.

    • What should I pack for my Yangtze River cruise?

Inside the cruise ships, central air conditioners are installed, since the cruise includes some outdoor activities, we recommend that you do the packing according to different seasons:
Spring & autumn: woolen coat, jacket, rainproof coat with a cap, comfortable walking shoes.
Summer: a light cotton T-shirt, shorts, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, rainproof coat with a cap, and comfortable walking shoes.
Winter: fur coats, jackets, windproof coats with a hood, comfortable walking shoes.
Please note: you need to prepare some nice clothes for the cocktail party and the banquet which will be held on cruise ships, and if you are willing to participate in the entertainment on board, you can bring a particular outfit with you. But remember: it is OK to attend the party in casual clothes.

    • What's the cabin like on ships?
Basic facilities like satellite color TV, central air conditioning, acoustics, IDD, private bathroom, hairdryer, and extension phones can be found in all the cabins. All cruise ships have staterooms, some with balconies. Presidential suites and deluxe suites are available in most 4-star and 5-star cruise liners.
