Archaeologists have found evidence that river snails have been eaten in China for thousands of years. Piles of empty shells have been discovered alongside evidence of ancient human occupation. So important are snails to the local diet that it has even been suggested that Chinese pottery was invented purely for the purpose of cooking snails.

In Chinese, these snails with their distinctive spiral shells are known as "Field Snails" as they are often found in the rice paddies or fields. They are also found in the Li River and its tributary, Yulong River.
