Six Harmonies Pagoda

The Six Harmonies Pagoda locates at the Yuelun Mountain, which is between the northern bank of Qiantang River and the southern part of the West Lake. It was first built in 970 of the Northern Song Dynasty. In order to conquer the onrushing blood, the emperor in Yue built the pagoda. Six Harmonies refer to heaven, the earth, and all directions, east, west, south, and north. But there is another explanation in Buddhist materials: If the bodies are harmonious, you may live together; If the mouths are harmonious, you will have no war; If the thoughts are harmonious, you will feel happy; If both of you abstain something harmoniously, you may work together in a temple; If your ideas are harmonious, you may work it out; If your benefits are harmonious, you will get proper wealth. So the pagoda is named Six Harmonies Pagoda.

The Six Harmonies Pagoda has seven storeys in all. On top of the pagoda, there are bright lamps which can show the direction for the ships at night. In 1121, the Six Harmonies Pagoda was destroyed in the war. The pagoda was rebuilt in 1156. The 13-storey wood eaves were rebuilt in 1900. From the outside to the inside, the pagoda includes the outer wall, cloister, inner wall, and small room. There is a corridor to go into the small room, which holds the figure of Buddha.
