The Six Harmonies Pagoda locates at the Yuelun Mountain, which is between the northern bank of Qiantang River and the southern part of the West Lake. It was first built in 970 of the Northern Song Dynasty. In order to conquer the onrushing blood, the emperor in Yue built the pagoda. Six Harmonies refer to heaven, the earth, and all directions, east, west, south, and north. But there is another explanation in Buddhist materials: If the bodies are harmonious, you may live together; If the mouths are harmonious, you will have no war; If the thoughts are harmonious, you will feel happy; If both of you abstain something harmoniously, you may work together in a temple; If your ideas are harmonious, you may work it out; If your benefits are harmonious, you will get proper wealth. So the pagoda is named Six Harmonies Pagoda.
The Six Harmonies Pagoda has seven storeys in all. On top of the pagoda, there are bright lamps which can show the direction for the ships at night. In 1121, the Six Harmonies Pagoda was destroyed in the war. The pagoda was rebuilt in 1156. The 13-storey wood eaves were rebuilt in 1900. From the outside to the inside, the pagoda includes the outer wall, cloister, inner wall, and small room. There is a corridor to go into the small room, which holds the figure of Buddha.

Seeing the Six Harmonies Pagoda outside, there are 13 storeys. But in fact, it only has 7 storeys. Climbing the spiral stairs, you may get to the top storey. The architecture of the pagoda is traditionally Southern Song Dynasty’s style.
There are more than two hundred brick carvings in the Six Harmonies Pagoda. It has abundant themes and vivid shapes. The beautiful guava and water lily, the awing phoenix and peacock, the leaping lion and Kylin, and the dancing fairy and princess, all the brick carvings are lifelike and extremely vivid. They are precious materials in the history of Chinese architecture.
The Six Harmonies Pagoda is one of the most famous attractions in Hangzhou. People who come here can not only enjoy the grandness of the ancient pagoda but also appreciate the beautiful scenery of Qiantang River. The Six Harmonies Pagoda has an elegant figure and proper proportion. Although it had been fixed for many times, it still keeps the original scene. It is the masterpiece of ancient architecture art in China. So, in 1961, it was listed in the important cultural relic protection unit.
