Simatai Great Wall Closed for Tourism Development
According to the latest announcement made by the local authorities, the Simatai section of the Great Wall in Miyun County of Beijing was closed to tourists on 17th June for renovation, and the re-opening date has not been scheduled. China Daily reports that "access to the once-popular tourist attraction has been mostly blocked with barriers running from north to west. Its ticket offices and other related ancillary facilities stand vacant and only management staff is permitted to enter the site." The renovation project was aimed to facilitate the local tourism economy and was observed as following a path similar to the development of the Badaling Great Wall.
Simatai Great Wall has been well known as a "Wild Great Wall" for its adventurous characteristics and original (ruined) features. Some of the tourism industry practitioners have shown concern about the possible over-commercialization of the site.
China Odyssey Tours will modify its great wall tours accordingly in relation to the closure of the Simatai Great Wall, and keep checking its re-opening date.
