Like other super cities, Shanghai never lacks skyscrapers and shopping malls; but there are attractive water towns to make Shanghai like no others. If you decide to take a short tour of water towns from Shanghai, choices are a lot. Zhujiajiao, Tongli, and Wuzhen are all within a range of 1-2 hr rides. Small and exquisite stone bridges, crisscrossing canals, cobbled lanes, old-aged houses, and the same old and undisturbed village lifestyle…all will contribute to a comfortable and leisurely escape from the fast-paced Shanghai. Though slightly different from one another, the 3 water towns are all well-preserved and representative, so no need to visit all of them. Choose one or two in accordance with your travel schedule.
Tongli is along the way from Shanghai to Suzhou while Wuzhen is more suggested if you have Hangzhou in your plan. For those who’d just stick around Shanghai, a 0.5hr drive makes Zhujiajiao quite competitive.
