What to Prepare for Visa-Free Entry to Hainan?
You can visit Hainan without a visa
- 1. Passport. It must be a valid passport of your own, with at least 3 months of validity remaining.
- 2. Details of your hotel booking and a return flight or cruise out of China. When you go through customs, you can present copies of these records.
It's worth mentioning that getting a translation app and a VPN help a lot. Although Hainan has opened up to the world, it is still considered a niche destination compared to popular cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an, so English is not widely spoken. If you're visiting, you can use translation apps to communicate with hotels, restaurants, and other services, or hire a private English-speaking guide to assist you.
In China, you'll need a VPN to access platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Google, and more. It's recommended to purchase a VPN service before your trip.

1. Can I visit Hainan and then mainland China without a visa?
Yes. If you're from 54 countries under the 10-day visa-free transit policy, you can transit to a third country via certain areas of mainland China and stay for no longer than 10 days. You will be visa-free to visit some popular tourism cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, etc.
However, to visit the mainland China, you need to prepare a ticket to a third country instead of a round-trip ticket. For example:
- U.S.A. - Hainan - U.S.A. (√)
- U.S.A. - Hainan - Shanghai - U.S.A. (×)
- U.S.A. - Hainan - Shanghai - Japan - U.S.A.(√)
If you don't have a further travel plan to a third country or want to spend more than 10 days in mainland China, you will need to prepare a tourist visa beforehead or apply for a port visa.
2. Can I come alone to Hainan? Do I need to join a group tour?
It's not a must to join a group tour. You can choose to travel on your own. However, you'll enjoy private cars, exclusive local guides, carefully selected hotels if you travel with us, and a customized itinerary, making your trip to Hainan completely worry-free.
