Xi'an took the period of great prosperity in the Tang Dynasty. It is not only the national center for both politics and culture but also the world famous capital and one of the important trade bazaars in the world of the day. In the Han Dynasty, Chang'an (nowadays named Xi'an) city zone covered an area 3 times as large as that of the ancient Rome city of the day.
The Tang Dynasty was largely a period of progress and stability; during the Tang era, Chinese culture flourished and further matured.
People's life was comfortable and entertaining, enjoying feasting, drinking, holidays, sports, dancing, singing and all sorts of activities. At that time, women's social rights and social status were incredibly liberal-minded. The first female emperor, Wu Zetian, was born at that time. Women were together and had their social club activities to exchange ideas and thoughts without the attending of men. Slightly fat (or plump) was considered fashionable for women. It is said that one of the four most beautiful women in Chinese history, Yang Guifei (719-756), Emperor Xuan Zong's favorite concubine, was a little plump lady.
