People do visit this part of China year-round, though, and with a bit of preparation you can have a splendid time regardless of when you visit.
Spring (March - May)

Temperatures are milder during the day, making this season a great time to get out on the trails. It tends to be rainier and cloudier during the spring, but you can expect stunning green landscapes in the grasslands during the latter part of the season.
Seasonal Tips: Nights can get very chilly, so bring plenty of layers. Some higher-altitude trails can be snowy, and it's a good idea to bring poles and waterproof shoes.
Summer (June - August)

How to Get to Gannan
Most people arrive in Gannan from Lanzhou, which is 238 kilometers away. There are no trains between the two spots, but you can take a private car or a direct express bus, which operates several times a day. The journey takes between 3.5 and 4 hours.
There's also a small airport in Xiahe, Gannan, that offers limited domestic flights from places like Chengdu and Xi'an.
