Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake are located just outside Dunhuang city in Gansu Province, China, on the edge of the Gobi Desert. From the top of the dunes, the landscape of the desert looks endless, with Crescent Lake nestled like a sparkling gem in the middle.

Ride a Camel

Try camel riding on Mingsha Mountain

We strongly recommend riding a camel to explore Mingsha Mountain. The sand dunes are quite difficult to climb, and although there is an assisting ladder, you usually have to wait in line to use it. By riding a camel, you can easily climb up the mountains and enjoy panoramic views of the desert with a distant view of Crescent Lake. The entire camel ride takes about half an hour, and the fee is 100 RMB (about 14 USD) per person.

Sand Sliding

If you get tired while walking on Mingsha Mountain, you can pay 40 RMB (about 5.1 USD) to try sand sliding. It's similar to skiing. You sit on a board and slide down from the sand dune, which is much quicker than walking down. Also, this activity is especially popular with children.

Another activity similar to sand sliding is off-road driving. Under the guidance of an instructor, you can drive a small off-road vehicle and race down the sandy slopes from the dunes.

Around Crescent Spring, you'll find classical-style pagodas and patches of greenery that can be enjoyed up close. Once you climb to the top of the sand dunes, you'll be rewarded with a stunning view of the area, where the spring appears like a desert oasis surrounded by sand.

Best Time to Visit

The best seasons to visit are April to June and September to November, when the weather is not too hot and ideal for desert travel.

July and August, during the summer holidays, are the busiest months and also the hottest time in the desert. If you plan to visit Mingsha Mountain in summer, we recommend going before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when temperatures are more comfortable.

If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting during the off-season from December to March. During this time, there are fewer visitors, ticket prices are reduced from 110 yuan to 55 yuan, and you can enjoy unique winter scenery, such as snow-covered dunes and Crescent Spring frozen over.

How to Get to Mingsha Mountain

After arriving in Dunhuang, it usually takes about 30 minutes to reach Mingsha Mountain from Dunhuang Railway Station and Dunhuang Airport.

However, there are no direct international flights to Dunhuang. Most travelers need to fly to Beijing or Shanghai first and then transfer to a domestic flight to Dunhuang. From Beijing, Shanghai, or Xi'an, the flight to Dunhuang takes about 3-4 hours. From Lanzhou, a commonly recommended starting point for a Silk Road journey, it takes around 8 hours by bullet train to reach Dunhuang.

If you'd like a more unique rail experience, consider taking an overnight train from Lanzhou or Xi'an. You can board the train around 7:00 p.m., sleep in a sleeper berth, and arrive in Dunhuang the next morning at around 6:00-8:00 a.m.

Travel Tips

Wear shoe covers and hike in the site

• Shoe covers are essential. To keep sand out of your shoes, you can bring your own shoe covers or buy them at the ticket entrance.
• Take sun protection seriously. We recommend wearing a hat and sunglasses. Sunglasses are especially useful for protecting your eyes from blowing sand.
• Stay well hydrated. Bring enough water if you plan to hike the dunes or try activities like sandboarding or camel riding.
• Photography tip. For photographers, the most iconic shots of Crescent Lake are taken from higher points on Mingsha Mountain, especially around sunset.
