The Mogao Caves are carved into cliffs and are divided into a southern section and a northern section. A total of 492 caves containing murals and sculptures still exist, with the vast majority located in the southern section.

There are nearly 500 caves in total, but only a small number are open to the public. During a standard visit, you will enter a randomly selected group of eight caves. The giant Buddha statue in Cave 96 is always included and is one of the site's must-see highlights.

You may notice that the caves are quite dark and have no permanent lighting. To protect the murals and sculptures from oxidation, staff guides use flashlights to illuminate the artworks while giving explanations.

Visit Museums in the Site

Near the exit of the scenic area, there is a museum displaying a wide range of cultural relics from the Mogao Caves, including statues, manuscripts, paintings, and recreated murals. You can find eight replicated caves from the Mogao Caves and Yulin Caves there. All of these caves are equipped with lighting. You can take photos and view the details up close.

It's also worth mentioning that the Mogao Caves scenic area has an art gallery showcasing exquisite musical instruments recreated based on those depicted in the cave murals.

Next to the entrance of the scenic area, there is a theater where you can watch two films. The first introduces the history of the Mogao Caves, and the second explains several special caves and their stories. Both films have Chinese and English subtitles. The visit usually begins with watching two introductory films about the history and art of the Mogao Caves. After that, you will take a shuttle bus to the cave area, where you will visit eight random caves with the company of a professional staff.

If you would like a deeper experience, you can purchase a special cave ticket to access selected caves or visit the art gallery and museum to see replicas of murals and sculptures in the site. After the tour, take the shuttle bus back to the main entrance.

How to Get to Mogao Cave

Both Dunhuang Railway Station and Dunhuang Airport are very close to the Mogao Caves entrance, and it takes about 10 minutes by car to get there.

If you are departing from major cities such as Shanghai, Xi'an, or Beijing, we generally recommend flying to Dunhuang. There are many domestic flights, and the journey usually takes about 2-4 hours. If you are traveling from Lanzhou, it will be quicker if you take an airplane. Taking an airplane from Lanzhou to Dunhuang only costs about 2 hours, while taking a train takes more than 13 hours.

Travel Tips for Visiting Mogao Cave

• No photography inside the caves. Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited inside the caves to protect the ancient murals.
• Dress comfortably and respectfully. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the visit involves walking and climbing steps. Since it's a Buddhist site, we recommend you wear long-sleeved clothes and long trousers.
• Combine your visit with Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake. Mogao Caves is less than a 30-minute drive away from them, so we recommend you visit Mogao Caves in the morning and Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake in the afternoon.
