Top 5 Places to Visit in Hainan

Hainan has many places worth exploring. A full island tour typically takes around 10-13 days. For first-time visitors, I've highlighted the top 5 cities below. If you're looking for a deeper experience, we can also customize a tour based on your interests and available time.

Haikou

Qilou Old Street in HaikouQilou Old Street in Haikou

Haikou, the capital of Hainan, is often considered one of the most livable cities on the island. It offers convenient transportation, relatively low living costs, and a vibrant local food scene.

When visiting Haikou, I highly recommend exploring Qilou Old Street. The architecture here blends Southeast Asian influences with traditional Chinese styles, creating a unique and charming atmosphere.

I usually suggest visiting in the evening, when the weather is cooler and much more comfortable than the daytime heat. As the lights come on, the street becomes especially charming and photogenic.

Insider Tips:

  • There are plenty of local restaurants around Qilou Old Street, choose a restaurant with a nice setting so you can enjoy the food while taking in the old street views.
  • Many locals still live in this area. If you visit early in the morning, you'll get a glimpse of authentic daily life, including lively local markets and a more real side of Haikou.

Sanya

Wuzhizhou Island in SanyaWuzhizhou Island in Sanya

Sanya is famous for its beautiful beaches and warm weather all year round. With a coastline stretching about 171 km, it is home to several popular bays, including Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay, and Haitang Bay.

Sanya Bay, located in the city center, offers convenient access to shopping and dining, along with beautiful sunset views. It's a good choice for travelers on a budget, as there are plenty of accommodation options at different price levels. However, the beach quality here is relatively average, and it can get a bit crowded during holidays.

I would recommend visiting Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay instead. Both areas tend to be less crowded and offer a more relaxing atmosphere. Yalong Bay is known for its fine white sand and crystal-clear water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Haitang Bay, on the other hand, not only features beautiful beaches but is also home to the Sanya International Duty-Free City, it is an ideal destination for honeymooners, shoppers, and families.

Insider Tips:

  • Luhuitou Park is a free scenic spot in Sanya, you will see a panoramic views of Sanya from the park. I recommend visit it at night, you will see a stunning lights view of the city.
  • Daytime temperatures in Sanya can be quite high, so be sure to use proper sun protection.

Wenchang

The "Laobacha" afternoon tea in WenchangThe "Laobacha" afternoon tea in Wenchang

Wenchang is known as the "space city" in Hainan. And it's one of the few places where you can witness a real rocket launch.

At the Wenchang Space Observation Center, you can watch the entire launch process of Chinese rockets up close. The viewing platform sits just 1.6 km from the launch site, you will see the whole rocket liftoff process clearly, feel the powerful flames and thunderous roar as the rocket rises into the sky. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Wenchang is an ideal destination for students and aerospace enthusiasts. You can also visit the China Aerospace Science Popularization Center to explore the history and development of China's space program.

Travel Tips:

  • Rocket launch schedules are affected by weather and other factors, and are usually confirmed about one month in advance. If you plan to watch a launch, keep your itinerary flexible. You can also contact our travel consultants for tailored arrangements.
  • If your trip included the rocket luanch experience, choose a hotel in Longlou Town is most recommended.
  • Don't miss the local "Laobacha" afternoon tea, it's a great way to enjoy Wenchang's relaxed lifestyle and tast local food.

Bo'ao

Bo'ao is a charming coastal town in Qionghai City, Hainan. Though small in size, it has gained international recognition as the permanent host of the Boao Forum for Asia.

If your itinerary includes Bo'ao, I recommend staying one night there, to fully enjoy its relaxed atmosphere. In the evening, head to the bar street "Story of the Sea", find a seat by the shore, sip a drink, and unwind as you take in the gentle sea breeze.

Just a 15-minute drive from Bo'ao Town, you'll find the South China Sea Museum, a national first-class museum featuring a fascinating collection of cultural relics uncovered through underwater archaeology.

In addition, Bo'ao is home to the Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, a world-class medical hub that has become a leading destination for international healthcare and wellness travel.

Qiongzhong & Baoting

Baihualing Rainforest in Qiongzhong Baihualing Rainforest in Qiongzhong

You may not have heard of Qiongzhong, a small county in central Hainan. While it doesn't have a coastline, it offers lush tropical rainforest scenery and a pleasantly mild climate, with temperatures around 25°C year-round.

I recommend visiting Baihualing Waterfall and taking a light hike through the rainforest. It's a great way to experience towering ancient trees and the untouched beauty of the natural ecosystem.

Just about an hour's drive from Baihualing, you'll reach the Shenyu Island Cultural Tourism Area. I suggest staying 1-2 nights at its resort, a peaceful wellness retreat that blends tropical rainforest surroundings with elements of Chinese culture. Here, you can meditate, practice Tai Chi, enjoy a quiet lake cruise, or simply unwind in nature, an ideal setting to fully relax both body and mind.

What is the Best time to visit Hainan?

Enjoy a beautiful beach vacation in HainanEnjoy a beautiful beach vacation in Hainan

Hainan is surrounded by sea and is suitable to visit year-round. Generally, the best time to go is from November to April. However, it's best to avoid the Chinese New Year holiday (Spring Festival), when Sanya becomes very crowded and hotel prices are at their peak.

The shoulder seasons: May to June and September to October, also offer great value. During these months, you can usually avoid the peak typhoon period, enjoy plenty of sunshine, and experience comfortable temperatures. It's an ideal time for activities like surfing, exploring the rainforest, and enjoying fresh seafood.

While in winter (January-March), you'll notice some temperature differences across the island:

  • Central areas like Qiongzhong are slightly cooler, with temperatures around 16-19°C (61-66°F).
  • In Sanya, the southernmost city, winter temperatures are milder at 21-24°C (70-75°F). It's a popular destination for senior travelers looking to escape the cold.

How to Get to Hainan?

Travelers from 59 eligible countries can visit Hainan without a visa, including the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, etc.

However, if you plan to travel beyond Hainan to other parts of China, you may need to apply for a visa in advance.

The good news is that China also have these visa free policies: the 240-hour visa-free transit and 30-day visa-free entry policy for certain nationalities. So in many cases, you can plan a broader visa-free trip across China.

Hainan has three main international airports located in Haikou, Sanya, and Bo'ao. Currently, there are no direct flights from North America or most European countries to Hainan. Direct international routes are more commonly available from Southeast Asia and Russia.

For most international travelers, the most convenient option is to first fly into major gateway cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong, and then take a domestic flight to Hainan.

With its warm climate and relaxed atmosphere, Hainan is an ideal destination for both senior travelers and families looking for a laid-back vacation.

If you have about one week, I suggest focusing on just two cities: Haikou and Sanya. You can spend 1-2 days in Haikou, followed by 3-4 days in Sanya, this allows for a relaxed and comfortable pace.

If your time is flexible, I recommend a deeper island loop across Hainan. The itinerary will be different based on your interests and schedule. Here is just a brief sample itineary for your reference:

  • Day 1: Arrival in Haikou. After arriving in Haikou, spend your evening exploring Qilou Old Street, and experience the history and local culture of Haikou.

Hainan cuisine shares many similarities with Cantonese cuisine, most dishes are typically light and clean in flavor, focusing on bringing out the ingredients' original taste rather than relying on heavy seasoning.

If you enjoy Cantonese food, you'll also love Hainan cuisine as well. Some of the most popular local dishes include Coconut chicken, Hainanese chicken rice, Lao Ba Tea (a traditional local tea culture), Hainan rice noodles, and Qingbuliang (a refreshing sweet dessert soup).
