We spent a week in Shenzhen trying out a wide range of novel tech experiences and came out with this article. Shenzhen has grown from a small fishing village into one of China's leading technology and innovation hubs. What's really interesting is that technology here is not limited to research labs or corporate showcases. Instead, it is deeply integrated into everyday life; you can directly see and interact with them out in the real world.

You will notice this almost everywhere across the city. Cutting-edge tech such as autonomous driving, drone delivery, and AI-enabled services shapes many ordinary parts of daily life in Shenzhen.

Robots and AI-powered gadgets are therefore a common sight around the city. You may spot robotic sweepers cleaning city streets, service robots giving directions inside metro stations, and self-service robot kiosks serving ice cream or freshly brewed coffee in many public spaces.

During our trip, we even spotted robot traffic police directing pedestrians and helping manage road traffic. Built-in AI vision lets them scan their surroundings, spot unsafe behavior, and give out voice alerts and warnings.

Beyond public-safety robots, many Shenzhen parks feature solar-powered smart outdoor fitness areas. Classic gym gear, including exercise bikes and chest-press machines, has been placed outdoors and linked to AI systems. Some of our group tested these during a morning workout and were impressed by how well they function. After connecting their phones to the equipment, they got real-time fitness data such as heart rate and calorie burn. This made it simpler to track their performance and reduce the risk of workout-related injuries.

This easy access to real-world tech experiences is exactly what makes Shenzhen such a fantastic destination to get a feel for China's innovation.

Which High-Tech Experiences Are Worth a Special Trip

1. Get Your Food Delivered by Drones

Drone food delivery is already part of daily life across Shenzhen. Orders placed via delivery apps are carried by drones to designated smart landing lockers. Users get notifications upon drone take-off together with an estimated arrival time and can watch the full landing process. This is easily one of the most worthwhile experiences to try. Few places around the world run large-scale, everyday drone food delivery like China does.

From our experience, parks such as Shenzhen Talent Park and Shenzhen Bay Park are ideal spots for trying this service. Park locations work better than busy urban zones, because waiting for your order becomes part of the overall experience. After placing an order, you can explore the park and head back to the pickup point roughly 5-10 minutes ahead of the estimated arrival time to observe the drone land.

The experience also varies depending on the time of day. For instance, ordering at Shenzhen Talent Park in the evening pairs nicely with the city's night skyline. During daytime at Shenzhen Bay Park, food deliveries can be combined with admiring the coastline.

However, this experience is relatively weather-dependent. It is not advisable to try it on rainy days: landing stations sit outdoors, and visibility for watching the drone land drops considerably.

A key practical consideration: most local delivery apps require a Chinese phone number and operate primarily in Chinese. We found it far more convenient to have a local guide place orders on your behalf, especially if you have dietary restrictions or allergies. Guides know the platforms and local menus well and can help you steer clear of dishes that may trigger your allergies or conflict with your dietary needs.

2. Experience Autonomous Transport in Shenzhen

Shenzhen is one of the few cities where autonomous driving is already part of daily life. During your trip, you can experience robotaxis, autonomous buses, and driver-free metro lines on real public roads, rather than within controlled demo environments.

We would say the robotaxis are the most worthwhile experience compared to autonomous buses and metro services. Much like Uber but without a human driver, you enter your destination on the app, and the car comes to pick you up. Once your ride starts, no driver sits behind the wheel, and you can watch the steering wheel move on its own. The central touchscreen lets you check your route, adjust the temperature, and control the music.

During our stay in Shenzhen, we wanted to try a robotaxi while planning our itinerary. Our guide located the nearest operational zone based on our schedule and arranged one for us to ride straight to our next stop. It felt less like a special curated attraction and more like an ordinary, everyday mode of transport.

Most robotaxis in Shenzhen are operated by Pony.ai (小马智行) and Apollo Go (萝卜快跑). If you plan to give robotaxis a go, we recommend Pony.ai. It supports registration with overseas phone numbers, and you can pay via Alipay or WeChat Pay bound to Visa cards. What's more, it fits groups of up to four passengers. By contrast, Apollo Go only allows three people per ride.

Bear in mind that robotaxi services may be temporarily suspended due to weather or operational issues. If this happens, our local guide will take you directly to your next destination, and we will find a suitable chance for you to try the robotaxi later in your itinerary.

3. Visit Shenzhen's Science and Technology Museum

The Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum is one of the top spots to explore emerging technology, especially for families traveling with children. Spanning five floors, the venue houses diverse displays across different levels. On the ground floor, you will find a small cinema offering glasses-free 3D experiences. Upper floors feature plenty of hands-on interactive exhibits covering AI, communications, new-energy technology, and space science.

If you are visiting with kids, tailor your route to their age group, since exhibit complexity varies greatly from floor to floor. This helps make your trip more engaging and less tiring.

• Young children (kindergarten age): Focus on Floors 1-3. These floors have more visually driven, easy-to-grasp displays, including foundational science showcases and beginner-friendly interactive stations.
• Primary-school-age children: Prioritize Floors 1-3, and sample select exhibits on Floors 4 and 5 if you have spare time.
• Teenagers (middle-school and older): Devote most of your time to Floors 4 and 5. They dive deeper into subjects including new materials, biotechnology, energy, and space exploration.

From our on-site experience, timing heavily shapes your overall visit. The museum gets far more crowded on weekends and public holidays, particularly during the summer vacation from July to August, where popular exhibits can come with long waits. Set aside at least half a day for your visit, and opt for a weekday trip whenever you can to avoid crowds.

For a more insightful tour, having a knowledgeable guide can be very helpful. A guide can help you navigate the museum more efficiently, walk you through exhibit principles, and steer you toward sections aligned with your interests.

4. Try Drones & Cameras at DJI Flagship Store

If you are into drones and photography, the DJI Flagship Store in Shenzhen is the ideal spot to experience the brand's cutting-edge technology. It showcases the latest and most popular consumer drones, alongside industrial-grade drone equipment on static display.

We did not get to try hands-on drone test flights, as official flight training is only available with an in-store purchase. And visitors can watch professional staff flight demonstrations only on weekends. We still enjoyed an immersive experience with DJI's official flight goggles. When wirelessly paired with a drone, the goggles stream real-time aerial footage, creating a vivid sensation of flying over the scenery in person.

You can also test full-function demo units of the latest DJI imaging devices and professional Hasselblad cameras on-site, rather than simply viewing static displays. We personally tried shooting with these devices, with trained staff providing patient, step-by-step operational guidance.

5. Try AI Companion Robots & Watch Robot Performances

As AI technology keeps advancing, companion robots are growing increasingly common in everyday life across China. In Shenzhen, you can visit specialized robot showrooms to test a wide array of such products, ranging from robotic dogs to interactive AI-powered devices.

At the Robot 6S Store in Longgang District, we spent an entire afternoon exploring the facility. One of the most fun highlights is coffee brewed entirely by a robot. You can even have your own photo printed onto the milk foam, creating a small, one-of-a-kind souvenir.

This location makes for a highly engaging stop for families traveling with children. Kids get to interact with companion robots and join robot-themed games, such as robot boxing matches or shooting challenges with robotic dogs. These hands-on activities are intuitive and easy for kids to follow. For older guests, AI-assisted medical devices are also on display, demonstrating real-world applications of AI within healthcare.

Afternoons are ideal for visiting the store. Humanoid robots take to the stage for scheduled performances between 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., each show lasting roughly 15 minutes. Children may even join on-stage to learn simple dance moves alongside the robots.

If you are curious to see more, head up to the robot restaurant on the fourth floor, where robots deliver food directly to dining tables. Plan your visit around lunchtime, as the restaurant generally closes around 6 p.m.

Experiences We Would Only Recommend If You Have Extra Time

1. Explore 3D Printing Technology at Bambu Lab Flagship Store

If you are fascinated by 3D-printing technology, don't miss the Bambu Lab Flagship Store in Shenzhen. It displays the brand's latest printer models and offers you insight into real-world applications of 3D printing.

During our visit to Shenzhen's first Bambu Lab flagship store, we discovered it is far more than a showroom for printers and materials, as it also provides free hands-on 3D-printing experiences. You may select a digital model from Bambu Lab's online library to print on-site, provided the print job takes no more than 30 minutes. The model we chose took roughly 20 minutes, and we watched as it gradually took shape inside the printer. Alternatively, you can wander around the adjacent shopping mall and come back later to collect your finished print.

Another in-store highlight is a large-scale 3D-printed city sandbox. You can use a controller to activate multiple interactive functions: you can operate 3D-printed toys such as cranes lifting objects, or drive miniature vehicles across the layout. Due to long queues, we only got to test out the car-driving feature.

The store sits within Shenzhen Bay MixC, around a 15-minute walk from one of the drone-delivery landing lockers. If you plan your itinerary well, you can combine both experiences. You may even observe staff preparing packages for drone delivery and witness the full sequence from take-off through to landing.

2. Explore the Biggest Technology Market: Huaqiangbei

If you want to buy new electronics, large shopping malls such as The MixC and Upper Hills offer flagship stores from major technology brands, including Huawei and Xiaomi. For an even broader range of goods, make your way to Huaqiangbei Electronics World, one of Asia's largest electronics markets.

Here you can find nearly everything: raw electronic components, brand-name laptops, and countless tech gadgets. This whole district of Huaqiangbei stands in sharp contrast to modern-day Shenzhen. Away from the city's futuristic skyline, it carries an older, more industrial vibe, almost as if you have stepped into a completely different side of the city.

It's particularly suitable for budget-conscious travelers. Many items come at low price points, though quality varies and may not be on par with official branded goods. Bargaining is standard practice here. A good strategy is to open negotiations at roughly half the asking price, then adjust your offer little by little until you land on a fair deal.

One practical plus: many local vendors can arrange international shipping, thanks to the district's deep connections with global trade. Your purchases can often be shipped straight back to your home country. Another convenience for overseas visitors is that plenty of shops feature English-language labels, so browsing and comparing products is fairly straightforward.

3. Experience Next-Generation Cars and Smart Electronics

You may have seen online videos of cars opening doors with simple hand gestures or automatically swerving to avoid pedestrians and obstacles. These features are now built into China's latest smart vehicles. Brands including BYD, Xiaomi, and Huawei are packing their newest models with AI-powered driving functions.

At BYD's flagship store in Pingshan, Shenzhen, you can experience assisted driving from the passenger seat. Demo capabilities include automatic lane-changing, adaptive cruise follow mode, and assisted parking.

One practical point to consider is the location of the store. The Pingshan store is quite far from the city center, with roughly a one-hour travel time each way. If you only want to get a feel for China's smart-car technology, visiting Huawei or Xiaomi showrooms inside downtown shopping malls will usually suffice. You can test many of these smart features conveniently there, without long travel times.

For the latest everyday consumer tech, Huawei and Xiaomi stores in major malls offer hands-on demos of devices such as real-time translation earbuds and smart camera glasses, plus seamless cross-device file-sharing functions.

Suggested 2-Day Shenzhen High-Tech Itinerary

Tips for Experiencing Shenzhen Technology

1. Check opening hours and reservations before visiting. Some tech attractions and robot experiences may require advance booking, while opening hours can vary a bit, especially on weekends.

2. Keep your plan flexible and have alternatives as your plan B. April through September marks Shenzhen has a rainy season, so rain showers are almost unavoidable if you travel during this window. Drone food delivery may still operate in light rain, but waiting outdoors for your food is less enjoyable in wet weather. Driverless taxis may also stop operating during bad weather. It's best to have alternative indoor activities.

3. Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay in advance. Mobile payment is widely used in Shenzhen, and having these apps ready makes it easier to pay for food, transportation, and other experiences.

4. Consider traveling with a local guide. Some high-tech experiences can be difficult to book or use without a Chinese phone number. A local guide can help with reservations, food orders, translation, and transportation, so you can focus on enjoying the technology.
