  Arriving in Datong, a former capital of various dynasties in ancient China, you are met by your private guide and accompanied to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax at the hotel or step out for an introductory exploration of the city on your own.

• Day 2: Datong, Yungang Grottoes & Coal Mine Tour

  Your tour today begins at the glazed tile wall Nine Dragon Screen, which offers you a glimpse into China's imperial past with its vividly crafted nine dragons symbolizing power, prosperity, and protection. A few minutes' drive leads you to the tranquil Huayan Temple, a venerable complex with intricate carvings, sculptures, and paintings depicting Buddhist themes.

  Then, drive out of the downtown (about 40 minutes) to an extraordinary UNESCO-listed site Yungang Grottoes, and marvel at its grand Buddha statues and intricate bas-reliefs. As one of China's most famous Buddhist grottoes, it boasts over 250 caves with an awe-inspiring collection of Buddhist art dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries.

  After that, take a unique coal mine tour (a 1.5-hour downhole visit may be included) to find out why Datong is also known as a coal city and the significant efforts have been made to improve its environment.

• Day 3: Datong, Mt. Hengshan & Hanging Temple

  Besides Yungang Grottoes, Datong is known to many people for its Mount Hengshan, one of China's Five Great Mountains. It invites visitors with its stunning natural beauty and sacred aura. There, you will encounter numerous temples and pavilions, including the Hanging Temple. Stand in the narrow corridors of this intricate architectural wonder hanging on the cliff façade to feel the thrill.
