Though the beauty of Yunnan can be enjoyed throughout the year, spring and fall are considered the best times to visit Yunnan because the climate is the most pleasant, and ethnic groups celebrate most of their festivals during this period.

Shoulder Season: March - June, September - November

The shoulder season in Yunnan, spanning from March to June and September to November, is our most recommended time to visit Yunnan. There are fewer crowds compared to the high season, allowing for a more relaxed experience. During these months, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities and natural sightseeing. You can capture the sunrise over the rice terraces of Yuanyang, hike through the thrilling Tiger Leaping Gorge, or cycle along picturesque Erhai Lake in Dali.

This period is also rich in cultural festivals, like the Water Splashing Festival in spring and various harvest festivals in autumn, providing unique opportunities to engage with local traditions and communities.

High Season: July - August, Public Holidays

The high season to visit Yunnan occurs from July to August, which is school summer vacation. Despite the summer months being the rainy season, the temperatures remain comfortable, and the lush, vibrant scenery makes it a popular time for travel.

Besides, public holidays, such as the Chinese New Year, Labour Day, and National Day, also see a surge in visitors as people take advantage of extended breaks to explore Yunnan.

If you are going to visit Yunnan, be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices for accommodation and attractions. Popular destinations like Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La may be particularly busy. Booking in advance and planning itineraries carefully can help your trip go more smoothly.

Low Season: December - February

The low season in Yunnan covers December to February next year. You can expect the lowest prices of the year during this period, but without the crowds.

Popular destinations like Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang enjoy bright sunlight in winter, while in mountainous areas like Meili Snow Mountain and Shangri-la, the night temperature will be cold.

Surprisingly, you can still enjoy summer in Yunnan during winter, especially in Xishuangbanna. This region offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditions of the Dai people, savor tropical fruits, and even encounter wild elephants.

One thing to note is that as the New Year approaches, Yunnan can attract plenty of tourists, the cost will be much higher during these days. But if you want to immerse yourselves in many ethnic celebrations, such as unique sacrificial rites, singing and dancing performances, just come.

Traveling through Yunnan by season allows you to experience the province's diverse climates and landscapes, each offering unique attractions and cultural experiences.
