Although Yunnan is beautiful year-round, Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November) are considered the best times to visit. During these seasons, the climate is the most pleasant, and many of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities celebrate their most important festivals during this period.

Yunnan’s climate varies significantly due to its diverse topography, which includes high mountains, deep valleys, and vast plains. As a result, different regions present distinct weather patterns:

  • In Central Yunnan (e.g., Kunming): Kunming enjoys a mild, spring-like climate throughout the year with average temperatures around 15°C (59°F). No matter which season you visit, you can expect comfortable weather.
  • Western Yunnan (e.g., Dali, Lijiang): Lijiang has a high-altitude climate with cool temperatures in summer and clear day-night temperature differences. In Dali, the annual average temperature is about 15°C (59°F), it is a comfortable destination year-round.
  • Southern Yunnan (e.g.,Xishuangbanna): Xishuangbanna stays warm year-round with clear wet and dry seasons. There is essentially no winter here, it remains humid and pleasantly warm throughout the year.
  • Northwestern Yunnan (e.g., Shangri-La): This is one of Yunnan’s coldest regions, with an annual average temperature of just 5.5°C (42°F). Summers are cool and excellent for escaping the heat, but winters are very cold with frequent snowfall.
  • Eastern Yunnan (e.g., Luoping): Luoping has distinct seasons and is famous for its vast canola fields. The best viewing period is from February to March, when more than 133 square kilometers of blooming rapeseed flowers turn the fields into a golden sea.

March to June and September to November are the best times to visit Yunnan. These months offer fewer crowds compared with the peak summer season (July–August), and the weather is generally mild and pleasant, ideal for outdoor activities and natural scenery.

You can enjoy sunrise views at the Yuanyang Rice Terraces, hike the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge, or cycle around the picturesque Erhai Lake in Dali.

Most Busy Season: July - August, Public Holidays

The busiest months in Yunnan are July and August, which coincide with the school summer vacation in China.

We suggest avoiding major public holidays, including the National Day Holiday, Labour Day and the Chinese New Year Holiday. Popular destinations like Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La may be particularly crowded.

Low Season: December - February

The low season in Yunnan runs from December to February. You can expect the lowest prices of the year, and travel without the crowds.

Popular destinations like Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang enjoy bright winter sunshine, while in mountainous areas like Meili Snow Mountain and Shangri-la, the temperature will be much colder, with average temperatures ranging from −9°C to 10°C (16°F to 50°F).

Surprisingly, Xishuangbanna in southern Yunnan still enjoys summer-like temperatures in winter. This region offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditions of the Dai people, savor tropical fruits, and even encounter wild elephants.

One thing to note is that the Chinese New Year holiday falls during this season. During this time, Yunnan attracts large numbers of domestic travelers, and prices can be significantly higher.
However, if you would like to experience vibrant ethnic celebrations, including traditional sacrificial rituals, singing, and dancing performances, this is an excellent time to visit.

Spring (March to May)

  • Water Splashing Festival: April is the best time to visit Xishuangbanna, when the Dai people celebrate their traditional New Year with the Water Splashing Festival. This three-day celebration, held from April 13 to 15, features dragon boat races, lively street fairs, and religious ceremonies, and culminates in joyful water-splashing activities symbolizing good luck and renewal.
  • Three Month Fair: In March, the Bai people celebrate the Three Month Fair, one of the most important festivals in Dali. During this time, the streets and homes are colorfully decorated. You can explore bustling markets, enjoy folk song duets, and admire lantern and flower displays.
