The high altitude of Shangri-La greatly affects its climate. At those heights, the less dense air causes fast cooling at night and strong daytime sunshine.
Usually, the place enjoys dry weather with very little moisture. Most visitors have found that the best time to visit Shangri-La is between March to June and September to October.

Winter November to March
Shangri-La's winter is the longest and coldest season, with most places at higher elevations experiencing regular snowfalls and rapidly dropping temperatures. The view is always breathtaking, but the cold might hinder your motivation to spend time outdoors. Some events to target during this period include the Gedong Festival (Dec. 26 to Dec. 29). Often regarded as a cardinal and important stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, the Dukezong Ancient Town remains a focal point for experiencing the rich history, culture, artworks, and tales of war and trade that once prospered here.
The town boasts humble yet beautiful Tibetan dwellings, prayer halls, and pagodas, all offering a bubble of tranquility for all those who crave it. Unfortunately, the town was gutted in a fire in 2014, which claimed numerous structures and relics and has since been on the road to full recovery.

Songzanlin Monastery
The Songzanlin Monastery, or the Garden Sumtseling Monastery, is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan and the most important one in southwest China. First built in 1679 at the foot of the Foping mountain, this monastery stands strong and tall, enticing all who visit with the mystery and beautiful traditions of the founding religion. Here, you will learn about the Fifth Dalai Lama, the famous eight gold-covered Shakyamuni Buddha sculptures, and much more.
It is a group of ancient golden-roofed castles closely knit together, with two lamaseries, Zhacang and Jikang. The magnificence of the main halls cannot be overemphasized, and the whole place is filled with historical treasures that you could spend hours or days studying and admiring.
One of the most famous events to occur here is the annual Gedong Festival, for which devotees come from far and wide to worship. Clear, shimmering, and vast, it also boasts a diverse and rich wildlife and plant population. Here, you can find some of nature’s most beautiful works of art: leopards, the Tibetan Pika, rhesus monkeys, lynxes, blood pheasants, and many more wildlife animals.
If you go in May, you’ll get to see the azaleas bloom to paint the forest, and when they fall in autumn, they garnish the lake for another type of amazing view. Here, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can find real peace and tranquility.
Shika Snow Mountain
Also referred to as the Blue Moon Valley, Shika Snow Mountain is regarded as a holy mountain in the local religion. Best known for the diverse vegetation and alpine and subalpine landforms, tourists have the 4.5-km-high altitude and climate to thank for the beauty of this place.
Only 7 km from the city center, the mountain is linked to the Napahai nature reserve in the north. To the south, you will find the world's natural heritage site, Qianhu Mountain. One of the most common wildlife species you will see here is the native red deer, which is a cherished mascot in Tibetan Buddhism. Snow caps aren’t the only option here, though! When spring comes, the rocks are exposed while the meadows become dense with blooming azaleas.
