Guizhou Transportation Guide: How to get to & Travel Around

Guizhou is located in southwest China, bordering Sichuan, Chongqing, and Yunnan. It serves as a major transportation hub in the region, with not only an international airport but also many railway stations, welcoming travelers from other places and sending them off to their next destinations.

If you're planning to include Guizhou as one of your travel destinations in China, this guide will help you understand how to get there and explore the surrounding areas.

How to Get to Guizhou

For most international travelers, the best way to get to Guizhou is to fly to Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou first, then take a national flight or train to Guiyang, Guizhou Province. Because there are few international flights to Guizhou.

By Airplane

Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport is the only major airport in Guizhou. There are many direct flights from major cities, like Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Hong Kong, to Guizhou. Most of them take less than 3 hours.

Occasionally, there are direct international flights to Guiyang, mostly departing from Japan, Thailand, or Malaysia, but the schedules are not regular.

When you arrive at Guiyang airport, it's convenient to get to your hotel via different methods of transportation.

• Metro: Line 2 will take about 20 minutes to drive you to downtown Guiyang at a very low cost of RMB 5.
• Shuttle Buses: There are 5 lines that cover Guiyang city center and major rail stations. Each ticket costs RMB 20.
• Taxi: You can take a taxi directly at the airport taxi stand or book a private car through DiDi (the Chinese version of Uber).

By Train

Guiyang has four major railway stations located in different directions across the city, which sometimes makes traveling by train more convenient than by plane.

If you are coming from cities in southern or western China, the high-speed train ride takes no more than 5 hours. However, Guizhou is much farther from eastern or northern cities like Beijing, Shanghai, or Xi'an, and traveling by high-speed train can take over 12 hours.

Getting Around Guizhou from Guiyang

If you want to explore Guizhou in depth, besides Guiyang, there are many other places to visit, and most of them can be reached by high-speed train.

Guiyang to Kaili

Time Cost: 35 min by high-speed train

Kaili is very close to Guiyang and is home to many ethnic minority villages, such as Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, Langde Miao Village, Zhenyuan Ancient Town, and Zhaoxing Dong Village. In these villages, you can enjoy traditional songs and dances, experience the local culture, and even rent ethnic costumes for photoshoots. If you prefer a more rural atmosphere, Langde Miao Village is especially recommended.

Guiyang to Tongren

Time Cost: about 2 hours by high-speed train

Tongren is famous for the stunning Fanjingshan Mountain and Tongren Grand Canyon, both great places for families to enjoy nature and relax. Hiking Fanjingshan takes about 3–4 hours, but if you're not a fan of hiking, you can take a 20-minute cable car ride to the viewing platform to admire the surrounding scenery. The trails in Tongren Grand Canyon are relatively flat, making it easier for children and elders, and if you're traveling with younger kids, strollers can also be used.

Guiyang to Anshun

Time Cost: 30 min by high-speed train

A must-see attraction in Anshun is Huangguoshu Waterfall. As the largest waterfall in Asia, it spans 101 meters in width and cascades down nearly 80 meters from a karst cliff. Another recommended spot for you is Tianlong Tunpu Ancient Town. Unlike many ethnic minority villages in Guizhou, most of the houses and foundations here are built from stone. The town has a simple, rustic charm with fewer tourists, making it a pleasant place to visit.

Guiyang to Libo

Time Cost: 1.5h by car or train

Libo Xiaoqikong is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is very peaceful, surrounded by lush greenery, and even the lakes shimmer in blue-green hues. About a two-hour drive from Libo lies the world's largest radio telescope, FAST, which is very popular among kids. Here, you can learn a lot about astronomy and celestial bodies.

Guiyang to Wanfenglin

Time Cost: about 4 hours by car

A stunning karst mountain landscape with no direct high-speed rail access. Wanfenlin is a vast karst landscape scenic area where you can enjoy the view of lush, endless mountains. If you prefer a more relaxed itinerary or are short on time, you can take a sightseeing bus that circles the entire scenic area, which takes about 2 to 3 hours. If you have more time, you can explore freely at the foot of the mountains by strolling through the fields, renting a bike for a ride, or enjoying family-friendly activities such as fishing.

Since there's no direct high-speed rail access, we recommend booking a private car. Taking a direct bus is not a perfect idea, as it takes a long time and requires transfers.

Guiyang to Zunyi

Time Cost: 45 min by high-speed train

If you're interested in liquor, don't miss Maotai Town when visiting Zunyi—it's the birthplace of Moutai, China's world-renowned spirit. You can also visit Wujiang Village, where the night views are stunning, and from daytime until nightfall, there are cultural performances held every hour.
