Best Time to Visit Hong Kong
Hong Kong enjoys a subtropical climate, with warm, humid springs and occasional light rain; hot, sunny summers with the potential for typhoons; mild and mostly sunny autumns; and dry, cool winters that are not too cold.
Overall, Hong Kong is a year-round travel destination. As long as you avoid the typhoon season, which is more likely to occur between May and September, there’s little chance of extreme weather affecting your trip.
If you’re looking for the best time to visit Hong Kong, it’s generally from late September to December. During this period, typhoons are less likely, temperatures are more comfortable, and there’s less rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities. However, each season in Hong Kong has its own unique attractions and charm. Let’s take a closer look at what each season has to offer in terms of weather and highlights.
Spring (March to May)
Streetscape of Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s spring is characterized by light drizzle and high humidity, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 29 degrees Celsius. If you’re visiting during this time, be sure to pack a light jacket and rain gear.
The most notable event during this season is the Hong Kong Sevens, a major rugby tournament that draws fans from around the world. Due to the influence of British culture, you’ll also come across various Easter-themed markets and activities in Hong Kong during this time.
Summer (June to August)

Hong Kong’s summer is hot, with temperatures often exceeding 33 degrees Celsius. While it’s generally sunny, there are occasional heavy rains, particularly during typhoon season. If you’re visiting in summer, pack light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, and rain gear.
Hong Kong’s air conditioning can be quite cold, so bring a light sweater if you’re sensitive to cooler indoor temperatures. Summer is perfect for enjoying water sports and beach activities. Around June, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated, and in fishing villages, you might see locals practicing for the dragon boat races.
Autumn (September to November)
Wong Tai Sin Temple
By September, the likelihood of typhoons decreases, and temperatures drop to a more comfortable range of 22 to 30 degrees Celsius. Lifeguards are usually still on duty at the beaches until November, allowing you to continue enjoying water activities.
For autumn visits, pack breathable T-shirts and lightweight jackets. The reduced rainfall and high visibility make this season ideal for hiking. The most significant holiday during this time is the Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration of reunion. During this period, you can purchase mooncakes at hotels and bakeries.
If your visit coincides with the public holidays of the Mid-Autumn Festival, you can join the celebrations at Wong Tai Sin Temple or local parks. October is also when the Hong Kong Tennis Open takes place, and in nearby Macau, the Macau Grand Prix and Gastronomy Festival are held in November.
Winter (December to February)
Victoria Harbour
Hong Kong’s winter is cool and dry. Although temperatures can drop to around 10 degrees Celsius, it’s still relatively mild. A warm sweater and a jacket should be sufficient; heavy winter coats are generally unnecessary.
During this time, Hong Kong celebrates the major holidays of both the East and West—Christmas, New Year’s Day, and the Chinese New Year. Hong Kong Disneyland, in particular, hosts special themed events for Christmas and Chinese New Year. The annual Countdown Fireworks Show at Victoria Harbour is also a major attraction on New Year’s Eve. If you’re planning to visit Hong Kong during these holidays, it’s recommended to book your hotel and tours at least three months in advance, as it’s a very popular time.
