It is not a single mountain but a mountain range made up of 72 peaks, with the most famous ones being Lotus Peak, Bright Summit, and Heavenly Capital Peak. Visiting Huangshan is safe. The trails are well-developed with sturdy stone steps, and there are plenty of rest areas along the way where you can take breaks and recover your strength.

The Huangshan entrance ticket is valid for three consecutive days, and you don't need to pay again during this period. You just need to make a reservation online or buy a ticket at the entrance of the Huangshan Scenic Area.

The most convenient way to reach Huangshan is to take a train to Huangshan North Railway Station, then transfer to an express bus to the Huangshan Scenic Area, which will take about 1 hour. However, buses are not the most comfortable option. We can arrange private transfer from the Huangshan airport or any train station, ensuring a smooth and private ride to Huangshan.

It's worth mentioning that Huangshan is very close to both Shanghai and Hangzhou, with the bullet train taking only about one hour. It's also close to places in Jiangxi such as Nanchang, Jingdezhen, and Wangxian Valley, so it's a good idea to plan a trip that includes all of these destinations.

The best time to hike in Huangshan is from March to May and from September to the first half of November.

During these months, the weather is pleasant, spring flowers and autumn leaves add vibrant colors, and the chances of seeing the sea of clouds are higher. Most scenic spots are fully open.

Summer, from June to August, also offers beautiful scenery with lush green mountains and wide-open views, and it's the peak season for waterfalls. However, summer is a busy travel season in China, and Huangshan has a daily visitor quota, so tickets need to be booked in advance.

Winter is the low season, with fewer tourists and discounts on tickets and cable cars. This is a great time to enjoy snow-covered landscapes and frost on pine tree scenery. However, some attractions, such as Heavenly Capital Peak and the West Sea Grand Canyon, may be closed.

Yellow Mountain and a sea of cloudYellow Mountain and a sea of cloud

Huangshan is most famous for its uniquely shaped peaks, such as Lotus Peak (the highest peak), Bright Summit (a great spot to enjoy sunrise and sunset), Heavenly Capital Peak (steep but with stunning views), and West Sea Grand Canyon. You can also see pine trees growing on the cliffs and rocky slopes, the most famous of which is the Greeting Pine near the Yuping Cable Car station.

When the sea of clouds appears, the towering peaks and upright pines create a scene like a Chinese fairyland, especially breathtaking at sunrise and sunset. If you travel with our local guide, he or she will help choose the best route for you and manage your time in case of missing sunset or sunrise.

We recommend setting aside at least two days for Huangshan, which means staying overnight on the mountain. Here's a sample itinerary for your reference:

  • Day 1: Ascend the mountain and explore the scenery. After enjoying the sunset, stay overnight on the mountain.
  • Day 2: Wake up early to watch the sunrise, then check out before noon and descend the mountain.

If you have more time, you can consider visiting nearby attractions such as Hongcun and Chengkan to explore the culture around Huangshan. With a private transfer, it only takes about an hour to reach these villages from Huangshan.

Huangshan in winterHuangshan in winter

In Huangshan, winter brings stunning rime ice on the pine branches, along with beautiful snow-covered scenery all over the mountains. However, some trails will be closed during this season, but it won't affect your ability to enjoy the overall views of the scenic area.

During winter, the two cable cars are still in operation, making it easy for you to travel up and down Huangshan Mountain. If you want to visit Mt. Huangshan in winter, we'll adjust your travel itinerary flexibly based on the weather conditions so you can enjoy your trip completely worry-free.

After snowfall, the paths may become slippery, so in addition to wearing a down jacket to stay warm, make sure to wear shoes with good traction.

Visiting Huangshan isn't difficult. The easiest way is to take the cable car up and down the mountain, and a one-way ticket costs 80 RMB (about US $11.30). Our local guide will choose the most suitable route based on your physical condition to make the hike comfortable and enjoyable.

However, even if you take the cable car up, there are still sections where you'll need to walk uphill. If you have mobility issues and cannot hike, you can hire scenic-area staff to carry you up and down the mountain in a special sedan chair. This option is an extra fee and costs much more than the entrance ticket, typically around 300 to 500 RMB.

We suggest bringing the essentials up the mountain, and everything else can be stored at the scenic area entrance.

Bringing the following items can make your trip lighter and more effortless:

  • A pair of your most comfortable shoes.
  • Quick-dry clothing. If the weather is cold, bring a windbreaker or a lightweight down jacket.
  • A power bank.
  • A water bottle. There are water dispensers near many restrooms in Huangshan where you can refill for free, so bringing an empty bottle can help reduce the weight of your backpack.
  • Energy bars.
  • Sun protection, such as sunglasses and a sun hat.
  • A trekking pole. It's not essential but will help a lot if you bring one.

There are restaurants on the mountaintop, but prices are generally high.

Since there are no driveways, all supplies on Huangshan must be carried up by hand, which makes prices on the mountain quite expensive. A bottle of mineral water may cost 10 to 15 RMB, three to five times the normal price. The restaurants on the mountaintop offer fast food like burgers and fried chicken, as well as Chinese-style stir-fry dishes. Some hotels can provide buffet lunch and dinner. You can even find milk tea shops and cafes on the summit, which make for nice places to rest.

There are many hotels to choose from on the summit of Huangshan. We especially recommend staying near Bright Summit or White Goose Ridge, as these spots are ideal for watching the sunrise. Options include Baiyun Hotel, Bright Summit Hotel, and White Goose Hotel.

If you want to explore the West Sea Grand Canyon, you can stay at West Sea Hotel or Paiyunling Hotel.

Of course, if staying on the mountain is beyond your budget, you can stay at hotels at the foot of the mountain or return to the city. However, this means you will miss the sunrise and only be able to see the sunset.
