• 1. Is it safe to travel to Tibet?

  Tibet is generally safe for tourists. The region is known for its strong sense of community and local authorities work hard to maintain a secure environment for visitors. However, to avoid any unnecessary trouble, please show respect for local Tibetan culture and religious practices, particularly when visiting temples and monasteries, and staying with official tour groups. Also, it is essential to pay close attention to any health problem caused by high elevation.

• 2. What is the best season to visit Tibet?

  The best time to visit Tibet is from May to October. During this period, the weather is more stable and suitable for travel and cultural festivals are celebrated. However, sun radiation is fierce all year round in Tibet, and most annual rainfall is from June to September. So, prepare essential sun-proof and waterproof equipment.

• 3. What papers are required for foreign tourists to visit Tibet?

  To enter Tibet, you must apply for a Tibet Travel Permit. For those planning to visit unopen areas outside of Lhasa, an Alien's Travel Permit issued by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) of Tibet is required. As the PSB only issues travel permits to Chinese travel agencies, independent travelers must arrange their tours through a travel agency to obtain the Alien's Travel Permit.

• 4. Is independent travel allowed in Tibet?

  No, independent travel is not allowed in Tibet. Travelers must be part of an organized tour with a registered tour guide.

• 5. How to get to Tibet and what are the transportation options?

  You can reach Tibet from mainland China or Nepal. 
  From Mainland China: major cities, like Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Guangzhou offer regular flights to Lhasa Gonggar Airport, with Chengdu having the most frequent departures. Alternatively, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the highest railway in the world, provides a scenic route to Lhasa.
  From Nepal: Travel options include flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa or an overland Journey via the Gyirong border. For the overland journey, you need to apply for a China visa in Kathmandu (even though you’ve already had one).

• 6. Where is Tibet and what are its geographical and climatic conditions?

  Tibet is an autonomous region in southwestern China known for its high-altitude terrain and harsh climate. Due to its elevation, Tibet experiences intense solar radiation and long daylight hours, and the thin air at high altitudes can be a challenge for many visitors.
  The region has diverse climate influenced by its varied geography, but overall, is cooler than other regions at the same latitude, with significant temperature differences between day and night. Days are generally mild and comfortable, while nights, especially in autumn and winter, can be quite cold, requiring warm clothing. The rainy season lasts from May to September, with showers mostly at night, while the dry season spans from October to April, bringing low humidity. Despite cold winters, the high altitude and abundant sunshine keep daytime temperatures relatively pleasant.

• 7. What are the things TO DO before traveling in Tibet?

  Here are some tips for your Tibet trip preparation.
  Book Your Tour Early:  
  Reserve your tour at least 10 days in advance to allow enough time for Tibet Travel Permit processing.  
  Book Flights After Getting Your Tibet Permit:  
  Some airlines require a Tibet Travel Permit for ticket confirmation, but the permit is typically issued only 2–7 days before departure.  
  To avoid complications, it's best to have your travel agency book flights for you.  
  Avoid Traveling in March:
  Tibet is closed to foreign travelers during Tibetan New Year (Losar), which falls in February or March based on the Tibetan calendar.  
  Instead, consider visiting Tibetan cultural areas in Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan, which remain open and offer similar experiences.  
  Plan a Flexible Itinerary: 
  Acclimatization is key due to Tibet’s high altitude. A relaxed schedule allows for proper adjustment and minimizes altitude sickness risks.  
  Confirm Your Itinerary in Advance:   
  Once your Tibet Entry Permit is issued, any itinerary changes require a new permit application.  
  If you plan to adjust your route (e.g., visiting additional destinations), notify your travel agency as early as possible to avoid delays.  

• 8. What to pack before traveling to Tibet?

  Pack proper clothing and footwear, such as thermal wear, waterproof hiking shoes, gloves, hats, and sunglasses. To deal with emergencies, prepare high-altitude medication and first aid kits. To protect yourself from a strong ultraviolet and dry climate, pack sunscreen and lip balm with high UV protection (SPF 50+), and moisturizer. Electronics like power banks, universal adapters, and cameras are also useful.

  - Potala Palace (3,700 m / 12,100 ft): Tibet's most iconic landmark, this UNESCO-listed palace in Lhasa was the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. It showcases stunning Tibetan architecture, golden-roofed halls, chapels, and thousands of Buddhist relics.

  Prevention Tips 
  - Gradual Acclimatization: Spend at least two nights in Lhasa (3,650m/11,975ft) before traveling to higher areas like Everest Base Camp or Namtso Lake.  
  - Stay Hydrated: Drink 3-4 liters of water daily and avoid alcohol or caffeine.  
  Eat Light, High-Carb Meals: Helps digestion and energy levels at high altitudes.  
  - Avoid Overexertion: Rest upon arrival and walk at a slow, steady pace.  
  Medication & Oxygen Support  
  - Diamox (Acetazolamide): Helps the body adjust; take one day before ascent (consult a doctor first). 
  - Chinese Herbal Medicine: Rhodiola (红景天) may help acclimatization if taken a week before travel.  
  - Portable Oxygen: Available in Tibet; use sparingly to avoid dependency.  
  Managing Symptoms

  In places like Lhasa and Nyingchi, there are many budget hotels and guesthouses suitable for cost-conscious travelers. They are usually at low prices, and some guesthouses offer a Tibetan-style ambiance with a friendly atmosphere.

  Generally, hotels in Tibet are more costly than in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, while they provide an authentic taste of the region's charm. It's worth noting that the facilities may not match the extensive offerings of urban hotels, but the opportunity to connect with Tibet's culture more than make up for it.

• 12. What are the traditional festivals in Tibet?

• 17. Why is Tibet written as "Xizang" on some occasions?

  The name "Tibet" is derived from historic Western interpretations. However, in China, the region is officially called "Xizang" (西藏). This term was first adopted by the Qing Dynasty in the 18th century and is used in modern Chinese administrative terminology to refer specifically to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).  
  Historically, "Tibet" also referred to a broader ethnic Tibetan region, including parts of Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu, and Qinghai. To distinguish the political-administrative unit from the wider Tibetan cultural area, "Xizang" became the official term.  
  Today, "Xizang" is commonly used in Chinese government documents, official maps, and state media, while "Tibet" remains the internationally recognized name.
