Tibet Travel FAQs
- 1. What is a Tibet Travel Permit? How to apply it?
To enter Tibet, you will need to apply for a Tibet Travel Permit. For those planning to visit areas outside of Lhasa, an Alien's Travel Permit issued by the PSB of Tibet is required. As the PSB only issues travel permits to Chinese travel agencies, independent travelers need to arrange their tours through a travel agency to obtain the Alien's Travel Permit.
China Odyssey Tours can handle all the permit applications for you when you book a tour with us. The government service charge for the permits is around $7-$10 per person. - 2. What are some of the unique cultural and religious characteristics of Tibet?
Tibet is famous for its rich Buddhist culture and traditions. The region is home to many monasteries and pilgrimage sites, with Tibetan Buddhism being a central part of life for many residents. The culture is also reflected in its art, music, and festivals.
- 3. Is it safe to travel to Tibet?
Traveling in Tibet is generally considered safe for tourists. The region is known for its strong sense of community and local authorities work hard to maintain a secure environment for visitors.
- 4. What are the preparations for altitude sickness in Tibet?
Known as the Roof of the World, Tibet is one of the highest places on Earth. Due to its high altitudes, visitors from lower elevations may experience altitude sickness. Most people only experience minor effects, such as headaches, loss of appetite, and low energy, until their bodies adjust to the altitude. This adjustment can take a few hours to a few days.
With some simple preparations before your trip, most symptoms can be avoided. Being healthy and in good shape before you arrive in Tibet will help greatly. We also recommend discussing AMS pills with your local physician to help combat altitude sickness. Once you arrive in Tibet, walk slowly and take deep breaths. Your tour guide will be there to offer help and suggestions. - 5. Is independent travel allowed in Tibet?
No, independent travel is not allowed in Tibet. Travelers must be part of an organized tour with a registered tour guide.
