A visa is generally required to visit Yunnan. However, travelers may be eligible for the 240-hour Visa-Free Transit policy. This allows visitors to stay in major cities like Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La for up to six days without a visa.

Yunnan is generally safe for tourists. However, some activities can be risky, such as hiking in Yubeng, due to high altitudes and steep terrain. Besides, be cautious with one of Yunnan's specialties, mushrooms, as some varieties can be poisonous if not cooked properly.
